We just returned from our first trip to Provence. It was wonderful, particularly since it had so few tourists. I reviewed the place we stayed at in Avignon. We based ourselves there for 7 days. It is Le Clos du Rempart. You can check that out. We rented the two bedroom apartment. It was reasonable and central for getting around Provence. Of course, many people recommend staying in smaller towns and that is OK too. But we did notice many restaurants were closed in the smaller towns.
I also suggest you put in an itinerary search for Provence and you might get some ideas. There was so much to do and we didn%26#39;t get to do half of what I wanted. I used Rick Steves Provence 2008 to do a lot of planning and then paid attention to TripAdvisor. There are a lot of Provence web sites online.
Another think we did, which I am not sure because of your younger daughters age would work, is take a wine tour. I haven%26#39;t put a review of it up on this site yet but it was wonderful. It was a tour of winery%26#39;s and a general tour of the countryside. It is Avignon Wine Tours. Francois now has 6 tours available. The newest is chocolate and wine. He only takes a maximum of 5 or 6 people so it would be perfect for you. We also went to lunch and coffee. We paid for the lunch individually, he paid for the coffee at another place. The lunch was fabulous and only cost 13e each. I think all his full day tours are 75e each but he does do 3 hour tours for 50e. It was one of the best parts of our trip.
Good luck.
