We are planning to be in the south for 6.5 days at the end of August, arriving at Nice airport.
We would like to see San Remo, Monte Carlo, Nice, Cannes, and any other great places in between... also, is St. Tropez worth the trip?
We are wondering if we should stay in a small city outside of Nice for a few days and switch half way through to a place outside of Cannes and rent a car and drive around... or should we just stay in the cities, Nice for a few and Cannes for a few and take the trains outside to the other places...
Is there a website for the trains that take you each place? Is it easy enough to rent a car once we are there... if we decide we want to just rent for one day... when I called AutoEurope from here, they said its a 3 day minimum so we thought we might have better luck over there.
Thanks!

The railway runs through the towns on the coast as far west as Frejus and Sr Raphael. Services are, by French standards, quite frequent. There are also a couple of lines into the mountains from Nice and a srvice between Cannes and Grasse. For just looking at the timetables I suggest you look at www.ter-sncf.com
I will leave it to others to comment on whether St Tropez is worth visiting in August but it is not on the railway and I believe bus services there are pretty sparse.

Thanks! Maybe that is one day we could rent a car from Cannes or something... we dont mind renting sporadically but I am wondering if we will find it hard to park when we want to get into Cannes or Nice...

Parking is expensive and hard to find in august
Hotels that have parking often charge extra for it.
Unless you want to go somewhere really off the beaten track, buses and trains are reasonably priced and convenient.
You can do st tropex by boat in August - the roads are crammed then and the boat is quicker and a much more pleasant trip.
St Tropex is a pleasant enough place and has a lot of buzzy atmosphere but will be mobbed with people and be very expensive in August.
Its an experience though =]
