My son has a student visa to study in France - apparently it has a one entry provision - does that mean he will not be able to travel to other european countries during his semesters as a student in Grenoble?

There are no border controls between France and the other Schengen treaty countries, which are most of western Europe excluding the UK. If he travels from France into (say) Germany, nobody will know or care. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Area

Thanks for your help with Europe - now , how about if he goes to the UK - will that stuff it up?

The UK is not part of the Schengen area. If your son has a %26quot;one entry%26quot; visa, he should not go to UK.
Check the link I gave previously. It lists the Schengen countries. If he goes to any other country, he would have difficulty in getting re-entry.

He should save the UK for the end of his studies and go there on his way home - the problem isn%26#39;t getting into the UK, it%26#39;s in getting back into France.
His visa is for a single entry and as long as he remains in the Schengen Bloc he can travel as he wishes. The UK isn%26#39;t part of the Schengen group so he would have to re-enter the Schengen group after visiting the UK - and he doesn%26#39;t have a multi-entry visa. He would be refused re-entry to France and be subject to deportation.

Be careful - even some Schengen visas do not give the right to travel throughout the Schengen area. While there are no routine border checks if your son is controlled at random where he shouldn%26#39;t be then there will be problems.
To be honest no-one can give good advice on this as you don%26#39;t say what passport your son has - this is what allows/restricts movement. To be sure of anything you should ask the issuing embassy what restrictions there are.

Thanks for all your help with this query
