Thanks its great that you have given a choice - we are celebrating so its a special occassion and I to make sure that we get a nice meal- nothing worse than visiting a bad restaurant ...

What would your top recommendations of %26quot;place to see%26quot; in and around Nice???

Thanks again - we%26#39;re looking forward to our visit : )

Best way is take the little tourist train on the promenade de anglais, get off at view point on castle hill. To see Monaco the take bus 100 from gare routiers for 1 euro, Loads other sights like Eze are also 1 euro from gare.

You will be there for Paddy%26#39;s day - check out ma nolans in old town for celebrations.

For a really special meal, I can recommend any of the following:

L%26#39;Aphrodite, 10 bd Dubouchage

Don Camillo

Le Padouk

Christian Plumail - l%26#39;Univers

Flaveur, 25 rue Gubernatis

Luc Salsedo, 14 rue Maccarani

Jouni, 66 bd. Franck Pilatte

I%26#39;ve been to all of them, except that we went to Jouni before he moved to his new location. If you want to go to these sort of places, it%26#39;s usually better to go at lunchtime when there%26#39;s normally a set menu for a very reasonable price. If you%26#39;re willing to travel outside Nice, there%26#39;s a lot more choice. I can also recommend a restaurant guide to read about most of them:

If I were coming here for the first time, my top 5 %26quot;must%26quot; see would be:

Nice old town, shopping and just wandering around, taking a break in bars.

Nice art galleries (Museum of Modern Art, Matisse Museum and the Photography Gallery are my favourites, but there are others too).

Vence and St Paul de Vence.

Eze, including the walk up or down or both on the Nietsche path.

Monaco.

Around Nice I would want to walk along the Promenade des Anglais, wander around the old city and explore the pedestrian street off Place Massena and possibly the Port area. I just visited Cimiez recently for the first time after numerous visits to Nice and was simply amazed by it. You take bus #22 to go up the Boulevard de Cimiez, you will pass the Chagall museum on your way up, and pass the Regina, a truly spectacular appartment?? building. Get off at the top of the hill at the Arenes stop. There is a park there containing ancient Roman ruins, an arena and other excavated buildings, as well as the Matisse museum. At the far end of the park is a church and former monestary with beautiful gardens and vistas and an interesting cemetery. I would then walk down the boulevard or take the bus back to see the Chagall museum. At that point you are not far from the train station and since it%26#39;s downhill you might want to continue walking or take the bus back into downtown Nice. Interesting day trips might include going to Antibes, Villefranche-sur-Mer, Monaco or Eze.

SZ- There are several buses which go to Cimiez

The 15 and 17 overlap with the 22 bus route - and also stop at arenes/mmusee matisse or Victoria

There are others which go to stop monastere [at the monastery] or cimiez hospital [behind the Regina building]

The Regina building is now divided into apartments but was originally the Excelsior Hotel Regina where Queen Victoria stayed several times - QV and her retinue took over the whole west wing -the one with the gold crown on top.

There is a statue of QV and her daughters in front of the hotel.

The Franciscan monastery is still active and you do see brown habited monks wandering around

selkiNice - Thanks for the additional and clarifying information. When I see such an area, I hope that the people who actually live there are grateful everyday of their lives that they are able to reside in such an exquisite setting.
