Budget breakfasts near Place Bellecoer in Lyon, France?

My wife and I will be staying at the Hotel Royal for a week in Place Bellecour, in Lyon France in May.

The breakfast at the Royal costs 22 Euros per person and that%26#39;s more than we%26#39;re willing to pay, given that we%26#39;re not big breakfast eaters--coffee and cereal and toast are pretty much it for us.

Does anyone know of any budget-priced places that serve breakfast within walking distance of Place Bellecour?

Well you won%26#39;t easily get cereal and toast, but that area if sull of bars and cafes where you%26#39;ll be able to get coffee and croissants for a fraection of the Royal price.

The cheapest way to get a good breakfast is from a boulangerie - go in and get a couple of croissants or some warm rolls or anything from what is normally a large selection and then sit on a park bench and watch people going off to work, walking dogs etc. You can often get a take away coffee there too.

Just returned from Royal and it is well located. Kiosk cafes are also just across the street in Place Bellecour. Can%26#39;t reccomend anything since we just had coffee til lunch.

You won%26#39;t get cereals for breakfast at French cafés, that%26#39;s for sure! But no problem to get a croissant or bread, butter and jam to come with your coffee.

There are a lot of cafés in the Royal neighborhood, you will be able to vary the pleasures every morning! I suggest you try those, all within a few steps from your hotel:

- Café de la Cloche, right after the street corner www.cafe-de-la-cloche.org/acces/index.htm

- The 2 buvettes on place Bellecour (one is right in front of the hotel) for an open air breakfast if the weather is sunny

- Bistrot des Arts, 20 rue Auguste Comte is very nice, you will have your breakfast with the mums who bring their kids to the nearby school!

- Le Caveau, 5 place Antonin Poncet

- Brasserie L%26#39;Espace, 26 place Bellecour

- For a special yummy breakfast, Pignol is a patisserie / salon de thé, 17 rue Emile Zola (you%26#39;ll have to cross place Bellecour)

OK that%26#39;s makes 7 places, one for each morning!

Thanks for the great suggestions--this is exactly the type of info I was looking for!

I can definitely live without toast and cereal, but was choking on the idea of paying 44 Euros for 2 coffees and a couple of sweet rolls. Sounds like there%26#39;s lots of alternatives, though, so we%26#39;ll save the pricey hotel breakfast for a morning when we%26#39;re feeling particularly self-indulgent.
