Any info on time it would take to drive from paris to rome??
have about 20 days.Is this enough time to have a good look around??

The distance is some 1400 km. Driving would take around 30 hours non-stop on autoroutes/autostrade. You could certainly see many places in 20 days.
Be aware that, if you hire a car in France and drop off in Italy, there will be a relocation fee of several hundred euros.

If you%26#39;re planning to hire a car for that length of time, you might like to consider leasing through one of the schemes operated by Renault, Peugeot or Citroen. We use Renault Eurodrive, and book it through the Sydney office; have done it a few times now and never a problem.
The minimum rental period is 17 days and there would be a drop off fee for leaving the car in Rome. I think that the earlybird specials are still going at the moment, so you might get a discount on this or have it waived altogether. Renault%26#39;s website is www.eurodrive.renault.com/cms/australie/ and you could also look at http://www.eurolease.com.au/citroen/ and http://peugeot.driveaway.com.au/ - they%26#39;re all much of a muchness.
There are many posts on the TA forum regarding the pros and cons of leasing vs renting - do a search in the box towards the top of the page and you should find them easily enough!

thanks for your reply. i am looking at leasing a car, and have seen that their is at least a 500aud drop off for the car in rome.Have you driven as far as the amalfi coast, if so do you think it advisable and worth doing.I prefer to see smaller towns and villages than big cities....

thanks, i have already looked at leasing.it seems like the better alternative....have you done the drive or leased a car ??

The Amalfi/Sorrento/Capri area is wonderful - but I think it might be stretching things for a three week period if you plan to dawdle there via back roads and small places. We were lucky to be on a three-month trip that time, so we were able to fit it into our final week. But it could work, if you made it one of your must-see destinations and missed out on other things along the way.
The problem is, it%26#39;s all interesting one way or another and you%26#39;ll wish you had more time. We always end up going back to an area we zipped through on an earlier trip, in order to slow down and see more of it! It%26#39;s a matter of working out what kind of things interest you - alps, wine regions, chateaux, caves, beach etc - and picking a likely looking route accordingly. We have some trusty (although ageing) road atlases that we use to help dream up our trips (minor roads are a drawcard for us, too).
Re the drop-off fee, we%26#39;ve always managed our itinerary so that we returned the car to France, thus avoiding fees. Fine with the luxury of time, I know, but harder for you with your three weeks. Not sure what to advise there - except perhaps to hire a car and drive from Paris to somewhere like Nice, drop off the car, then catch a train to Italy and hire another vehicle there. Or use trains mainly and just pick up a car here and there for a few days to explore the less accessible places.

Driveaway Holidays are still doing the Eurolease Earlybird Special for bookings up to 31 March. This reduces the drop fee in Rome to AUD257.50.
I wouldn%26#39;t bother going down to Amalfi. You will have plenty of opportunities to enjoy small villages in Provence, Tuscany, Cinque Terre and even Portofino between Paris and Rome, depending on which route you take.

Couple things to mention that weren%26#39;t raised in the forum. We did the paris to rome trip this past summer with renault eurodrive - leasing as noted works for %26gt;three weeks or so. Tolls are significant in both countries, try to get a deisel, and photo radar lives in France, its everywhere, I saw several flashes but was never billed. You%26#39;ll have plenty of time so long as you don%26#39;t intend on doubling back to return the car in paris.
