I%26#39;m hoping to spend five days in the south of France, preferably Provence - it%26#39;s been many years since I%26#39;ve been there!
I will be taking my parents, so I%26#39;m trying to decide whether to:
- base in a city and explore from there
(I have Avignon on my radar, but hotels seem expensive and there are few rentals that rent for less than a week)
- base somewhere outside of town
I%26#39;d like to be a bit independent and at least be able to walk and get a cup of coffee and a paper without having to drive somewhere, but can manage otherwise.
Any input from experienced travelers? Other towns/cities I should take into account? I%26#39;ll be flying back out of Paris CDG ...
Thanks!

While mmost rentals are indeed for 7 nights, you might be able to find a place if you happen to be travelling outside of the %26quot;High Season.%26quot; An alternative might be staying in a B%26amp;B rather than a hotel. Another possibility might be staying in a hotel in one of the smaller towns rather than in a larger city like Avignon.
If this is your parents%26#39; first trip to Provence, another consideration is that a smaller town will also have a more %26quot;provencal%26quot; feel to it, and you will be able to indulge you desire for a bit of independent %26quot;being.%26quot; Other considerations will be your parents%26#39; interests - food, ruins, nature, markets, museums etc. Also, since you are flying out of CDG, which airport in Provence do you intend to fly into and out of? Marseille might not be a bad choice.
If you check out TA on a regular basis, undoubtedly you will understand that everyone has their favorite place(s) to stay. In all honesty, I am an AlpillesGal, so you can bet that I am going to suggest someplace in or near Les Alpilles - possible choices include St. Remy, and Maussane-les-Alpilles.
Hoping to hear form you with more input re your/treir interests.

Thank you, AlpillesGal!
It turns out my parents have been to the Provence/Carmargue area on a bicycle tour, but their interests are fairly general. I think I talked them into the trip, since it%26#39;s been far, far too long since I%26#39;ve been to France and that area. (Read: My recollections are vague and not really reliable as to what I would enjoy now.)
I had chosen Avignon since I figured it would be easy to get to and out of by train. I have since rethought that, my father has a hip issue that - although he is in good shape - would not allow him to walk for hours, so perhaps having some kind of transportation (car) would make sense after all.
We%26#39;ll be there end of March to about April 3 or 4, so just at the end of low season/beginning of mid-season, if I read this correctly.
My interest is really just reconnecting with France and reviving my French before it dies completely:-) - living in the US is not conducive to keeping up your language skills!
I have never even heard of the place you mentioned, but will definitely check it out now - thank you!! (Just as I was about to settle on the Ile-sur-la-Sorgue area ... there%26#39;s just too much to see!)

We just stayed at Le Clos du Rempart in Avignon. I did a review of it here but they have a 2 bedroom apt and 2 single rooms for rent. The apt is up windy stairs from the outside entrance but fewer stairs when you enter through the garage or through the single rooms area. It might be an option for you. I don%26#39;t know if she rents for only 5 days but the place was great and within walking distance to everything in the walled city.
