Bibliotheque Nationale-Rue de Richelieu

Does anyone know if any copies of the Gutenberg Bible are on display at this location. I have read that many manuscripts have been moved to the newly built National Library of France, but I can%26#39;t find a site that tells me what is in the collection at this site. Thanks for your help.

I am not sure where they keep the bibles, but my money goes to the Françcois Mitterand location. They own three and I do not believe that they are generally on display.

The Mazarine library also has one. It is not on general display and a viewing would require a written request, which may, or may not be accepted.

I don%26#39;t think they moved it, as they kept the coins, illuminated mauscripts or fragile ones, i believe they didn%26#39;t take the risk of moving the bible.

But i don%26#39;t think they would show it, unless maybe for an exhibition about printing, or writing etc...

I just googled it and it is still at the old location, this is the link :

expositions.bnf.fr/parole/grand/074.htm

it mentions collection of rare bookks, so i am guessing it would be very very difficult to access it, like you would need to be doing a research, a PHD or something.

But i found there is another one in the Bibliothèque Mazarine at the Institut de France, you may have better luck there, but i believe you also need to show eveidence that you are doing some king of research.

Thank you for your responses. Would have loved to have had the opportunity to view one of these bibles.

It%26#39;s been a few years since I%26#39;ve been in either the Bibliothèque Mazarine or Bibliothèque Nationale-Rickelieu...but apart from %26#39;special%26#39; exhibitions I don%26#39;t recall any ancient manuscripts or books on display. The Mazarine does have a three-volume edition of the famous Guttenburg %26#39;Mazarine Bible%26#39; but it is not out on public display. These volumes are simply too fragile and too valuable to be put on constant display...and these days, the cost of the security measures required to insure their safety would be prohibitive.

But even without being able to view the Bibles...any of these historic libraries are well worth the time and %26#39;hoops%26#39; you might have to jump through to visit them. These great libraries were the %26#39;temples of knowledge%26#39; of their age and you visit them, you could be forgiven if you thought your heard %26#39;wispers of wisdom%26#39; emanating from their stacks.

Thank you for all this additional information. Our son-in-law who will also be visiting Paris with us and who is an ancient coin enthusiast was hoping to see the coin and medallion exhibit as well. I went to the link provided above and noted the Library-Richelieu will be closed in September 2009 during the time of our visit. Does anyone know if this closure also includes the Cabinet des Medailles et des Antiques? So much of the information on the web sites is in French, of course, and I am VERY rusty with my high school/introductory university french from decades ago.
