Hello ! At the end of June I can choose to stay in Marseilles, Avignon or Arles ?! Can anyone give me some sort of input please ! My husband and I will be flying into Marseilles, we will be hiring a car and enjoy the countryside, art, beach and history - which I know the area is full of ! Any advice ? Many thanks in advance !

Are you limited only to those options? There are so many lovely towns and villages that will give you a better feel for Provence thatn being in one of these larger towns/cities.
If you must choose between these three, I would go with Arles. Aix is also a good choice. If you can opt for something smaller, let us know and we can give you direction there.
How long will you be in Provence?

hello ! we have one week, I cannot choose anywhere different as the trip is a competition win! Having read your helpful review I reckon Arles is the better option for us as it is a little quieter! many thanks..

You probably know this already but DO know what size tablecloth will be the right fit as you will have many choices of linens in provincial designs that are hard to resist and which you will see every day in a great variety of quality.

Hi
Have a look at my Trip Advisor reveiew for Chateau de la Loubiere, in Pertuis, about 30 mins drive from Marseille and 20 mins from Aix and with easy access to Avignon and Arles..... then you can get to see them all and a whole lot more
www.laloubiere.com
Hope this helps

We just spent a week in Avignon with a car and it was wonderful. I know many on this forum recommend smaller towns and I can see why but as first timers with limited time, we decided a bigger town would be easier. This way we could go to a variety of restaurants in the evening without driving and parking was included with our rental. We stayed at a B%26amp;B and rented the apartment. There were also two rooms available but I wanted to feel like I was living there. Avignon was perfect for taking day trips to Arles, Aix-en-Provence, villages of the Luberon, Nimes, Pont du Gard, Les Baux, and Cassis. We ran out of time or we would have seen more! I think selecting either Arles or Avignon would be fine. Marseilles would work too, but you would have to drive a little farther to see some of the sites. If you do select Avignon, make sure where you stay is in the Centre Ville (old part in the walled city). By the way, driving is easy. The road signs are better than a map although have the Michelin 324 (I think that is the number) was very helpful.
