We are wanting to travel from Budapest in September to St Tropez in the South of France via Austria, Switzerland and Italy into the South of France, ending up near to or at St Tropez. We are prepared to take about 3-4 days on the journey. Any ideas re good places to stay overnight and the general route? We hope to use a Eurail pass but because seeing the country side is the goal of this trip we do not want to take an overnight trip. Is this a doable trip and should we book more than a couple of days in advance? Any information or advice much appreciated.

1 option is Budapest to Munich, Munich to Lucerne, Lucerne to Milan, Milan to St Tropez (actually only to St Raphael I think then a bus). As you%26#39;re in express trains you see the country side from a bit of a distance. At each stop you can find hostels etc or if your budget stretches nicer hotels. In September there%26#39;s probably no need to book a long time in advance.
A good site for advice on European trains (actually any train) is
www.seat61.com
Hope this helps,
