Skiing in the French Alps

Arriving for business in Nice 3/4/09...need info. for closest ski area w/ public transportation,ie train, to do some skiing in the Alps over the weekend..have a short time line...any suggestions???

Downhill or x-country skiing?

what level of skiing types of runs do you prefer?

modern resort of one with an alpine village ambiance?

|||

that should have read %26#39;modern resort OR one with alpine village ambiance%26#39;

The Serre Chevalier ski domaine in the Hautes Alpes region is probably one of the closest in the southern Alpes. It%26#39;s a wonderful traditional area (as opposed to purpose-built). There are 12 or so lift-linked villages along the river. It%26#39;s about a 4 hour car ride to the main town of the area, Briancon. There is a train station but you%26#39;d have to check www.voyages.sncf to see about connections.

Serre Chevalier is too far away for a quick jaunt from Nice

Auron, Isola 2000, Beuil / Valberg , St Martin Vesubie and La Colmiane are all a one euro bus ride away from Nice centre

TAM public bus numbers- for ski resorts

L 730 %26gt; Saint-Martin-Vésubie

L 740 %26gt; Auron

L 746 %26gt; La Colmiane

L 750 %26gt; Isola 2000

L 770 %26gt; Beuil / Valberg

TAM time tables here

cg06.fr/transport/transports-tam-fiches.html

you need to reserve a place at least the day before by calling

0805 402 606

Auron and Isola 2000 ( 740 et 750) you pick your ticket up after reserving a day in advance 20 minutes before the bus departure form the santa azura desk in the bus station

for Valberg, La Colmiane et Saint-Martin-Vésubie, you buy the ticket from the driver [after pre reserving]

once at Auron you have to pick your return ticket by 13h from the tourist office

once at Isola 2000 you pick your return ticket up by 13hr if returning same day from the Caisse des remontées mécaniques [ski lift office] or the santa azura office

for Valberg, La Colmiane, Saint-Martin-Vésubie you buy the return ticket from the bus driver.

There is also a special ski bus to Isola and Auron which include the ski pass plus day return transport

santa-azur.com/santa-azur/…170_SKIBUS_1.html

The special ski bus gives more time in the ski resort than the regular public buses but the public buses allow a return on a different day if you want to stay over [just buy the ticket in advance before 4pm the day before departure if applicable ] .
