IS wine tasting quite relaxed in Alsace? Can you just drive up and taste or do you need to book etc as in the way you must make appointments in Bordeaux?

Quite relaxed and friendly, in my experience, no reservations necessary, at least at the places I visited. If you have a special domaine in mind to visit, you should probably check to see if they require notice.

Thanks. I am excited about doing the wine route. Do wineries in Alscae have restaurants attached? As many do in the New world?
