Like others posting here, we only have 4 days to enjoy Nice. We have an apartment picked out in Old Nice and we will not get a car. We arrive Friday morning April 24 and leave Tuesday April 28. There are 7 people and 3 generations (76 to 16 years old) coming to celebrate my 50th birthday.
Besides seeing the highlights in 4 days (I think I can get those from previous posts), I%26#39;d specifically like to know what to do on what days. Since we will be there Friday through Monday, can you Nice-experts let me know what to see on what days to avoid museum closures, store closures, etc.? We are planning to see most of the art museums, the Russian cathedral, the shops on Jean Medecin, a market tour and we are considering a day tour on Sunday (open for suggestions).
Are shops closed Sunday? Do they close in the afternoons? Is the tram a useful way to get to these sights, or is the hop-on, hop-off bus better?
And, most importantly: where can we get a great birthday cake within walking distance of our Old Nice apartment?
Merci!

what kind of birthday cake?
what sort of things would you like to do on the day trip?
what time do you arrive on the friday and what time do you leave on the monday?
does anyone have any health problems/difficulties in getting around?

Birthday cake: something pretty and chocolate
Tours: art, history, mysteries and food! My dad is a big history buff and I guess it rubbed off on us as well. Romans, Greeks and Goths, oh my. Visiting pretty little villages would be nice, but I%26#39;d hate to choose a day when shops and restaurants are clsoed (Sunday? Monday?)
We can all move around with no problem- we just aren%26#39;t trained for marathons :)

Oh, and we get there at 8:30 AM Friday and depart 10:30 AM Tuesday. Any car service suggestions? How many hours ahead of our flight should we be at the airport on Tuesday morning?
Many thanks

Birthday cake- there are lots of boulangeries-patisseries around within the Old Town and also on Jean Jaures on the edge of the old town.
Just wander around and see which cakes take your fancy. Choosing the nicest cake is part of the fun.
Most shops shut on sundays , though shops in the old town will often be open and some supermarkets are open on sunday morning. The big clothes shops are usually shut.
Small shops in Nice are generally shut on monday morning if not all day but the big shops are open.
The food markets are all off on a monday but usually there is a brocante/bric a brac/antiquey/flea market in cours saleya
The Russian cathedral gates are shut between 12 and 2 every day.
Matisse museum is shut on tuesdays
archaeological museum and arcaheological site shuts on tuesday
Musee massena shuts tuesdays
chagall museum is shut on tuesday
Franciscan monastery and museum is shut on sunday-though the gardens are open
MAMAC is shut on mondays
The tram is excellent but doesn%26#39;t go everywhere [russian cathedral , cimiez] . Buses are quite easy to use for places the tram doesn%26#39;t go.
The hop on hop off bus I would recommend for folk who only had a day in Nice and didn%26#39;t want to spend time working out the buses and trams - its quite expensive
For a day trip on sunday and for someone who likes mysteries I suggest you head to cannes on the train and take a ferry to Ile Ste Marguerite and see the cell of the man in the iron mask . There is also a theory that he escaped and hid in le suquet Old cannes in the Tour du Masque 12th centruey tower [there is an iron mask attached to an arch that is supposed to be one of the two made for the prisoner-though other reports say the mask was leather or velvet.
