I%26#39;m a first timer and would like to rent an apartment for 10 days in Paris.....our plan is to get a feel of the city, major sites and attent the Roland GArros.
People tell me to stay within districts 1-9
I find beautiful places is 18th....is it OK? Safe? convenient?
|||
Where in the 18th have you found beautiful places exactly? It%26#39;s an important question.
|||
Found it rhough FEELS LIKE AT HOME IS OARIS on 1 rue Gabrielle - Paris 75018 (18th district)
IS this a good company to rent from?
|||
I can%26#39;t spell...Here it is again
Found it through FEELS LIKE AT HOME IN PARIS....is thata realiable company to go with?

albaelena, it%26#39;s gotta be one of the most interesting and unique locations in Paris. I know nothing about the agency but the location has to be the closest thing to the epicenter of the downside AND upside of Montmartre.
Downside, WAY to close to the Sacre Coeur and the hornet%26#39;s nest of tourist predators and commercial chaos.
Upside, really exciting location and not necessarily dependent on access via the skirt of the Sacre Coeur. It%26#39;s near but not necessarily connected to the chaos at the bottom of the butte.
It%26#39;s as %26quot;safe%26quot; as most places in Paris but the area around Place St-Pierre at the base of Sacre Coeur is somewhat seedy and can be quite unpleasant at times. If you rent this apartment, focus away from there and you%26#39;ll find terrific neighborhoods to the north like the area around Abbesses and further northeast.
The way to think about this is, Montmartre is a precious place in Paris and has more charms than warts. Avoid the %26quot;skirt%26quot; of Sacre Cour around Place St-Pierre, the area directly in front of the basilica, and you will love Montmartre.
I say this sincerely, it%26#39;s a very special place in Paris. We%26#39;ve spent months there and still would.

People who only think about districts 1-9 obviously don%26#39;t know Paris as well as they should. yes 1-9 are closer to some sights than other districts but not to all sights anyway. Going to Rolland Garros or anywhere else in Paris is easy with the metro no matter where you live. Yes you need to get used to the metro and learning how to change from this line to that line etc. but millions have done it. Coming from Texas and is wide spaces (even in a town) you better be ready for the shock of narrow streets and masses of people everywhere. Rue Gabrielle is about 2 blocks west of the Sacre Coeur Church and %26quot;downstairs%26quot;-literally from Place du Tertre (Google both if you aren%26#39;t familiar with them). The street ends on the West at Rue Lepic, a street with lots of stores and restaurants and starts on the East at one of the famous staircases going up the hill. I don%26#39;t know that particular street and bet that few tourists, or Parisians for that matter, ever walk that street, in their rush to go to the Sacre Coeur and other sights, so it should be quiet (mind you, if you Google rue Gabrielle you get lots of internet sites..). The only drawback is that going to the nearest Metro (Abbesses) or walking to anywhere will be up and down the hill. Then you have to walk up from the street to your 4th fl. apartment. You will also need to print a bigger version of the area map as the streets around your apartment, as in many old districts in Europe, are a maze. Would I, a young early sixties guy rent the place (IF YOU get good reviews about the company) YES.

I%26#39;ve had very good luck renting apartments thru www.vrbo.com and www.homeaway.com both in U.S. (CO, VA, TN, GA, NC, FL), Italy, and soon to be Paris. There are SO many to choose from. A guideline I follow is to always rent from sites that show a lot of pictures which also have a number of guest reviews. In over 8+ years I%26#39;ve never experienced a problem.

For a first timer would you recomend a hotel? I think New Orient is in this area.....are you familiar with it?
Have you rented apartments? Whom would recomend?
|||
We know the Hotel New Orient from 2001 and 2003!! Great little boutique hotel. Well managed, the rooms are nice but the street is noisy in the warm-weather months when the windows need to be open. Love this little hotel.

Gail is a wonderful host. They specialize in rentals in Montmartre. Do a search in the upper right hand box for past threads.

I would recommend the Timhotel Montmartre in rue Ravignon, around the corner from rue Gabrielle.
