One Night Stay on MSM

We%26#39;ll be staying one night at MSM in October of this year. I believe we%26#39;ll see the high tides, at least according to the stuff I%26#39;ve read on the tide tables.

I think we%26#39;ll arrive around 3:00pm-ish and will need to leave by 10:00am the next day.

I have absolutely no plans while there, except to see the tides - if they are high, see the abbey, ramparts, etc.

Is there anything in particular you would suggest we not miss? Anyplace you%26#39;d suggest for dinner for a family of four?

Thanks for any input.

Truly, it is a pretty island (almost) and the tide thing, at least several years ago, was spectacular. It will probably be a bit of a human traffic jam as there is only the one street, so use the ramparts as much as you can.

There is really nowhere special to have a meal. They are all very touristy and not very good for the price. A picnic on the ramparts might be a nicer idea. However, there is one restaurant which has a view out to the bay which might be the best of the bunch.

If possible, book a bay view room. The street is very noisy all night as they move rubbish out and supplies in.

Keep a copy of your reservation in the car. When we went it allowed us to park much closer to the walls, which is important with luggage. For safety I would recommend taking it all into the village.

My specials were walking back along the causeway at night and getting night photos (take a tripod) and getting up really early in the morning and getting a dawn photo of the sea as a sheet of gold with seagulls floating on it. Loved walking the ramparts and around the lower areas of the island too.

The abbey closes at 6pm so that is your first priority. It is quite a haul to the top.

Lynn - thanks for the information, I appreciate it. We%26#39;ll be sure to get to the abbey before it closes, and then wander around after that. Do you know how close the parking is to the hotels? We dont%26#39; mind walking or lugging bags, but I%26#39;d like to forwarn my family so I dont%26#39; hear any complaining :)

thanks

When we were there, and it might have changed because they were planning some works, we were allowed to park quite close in, about 200m from the gates to the island. Then you have to lug them up the street and possibly up stairs depending on your accommodation.

If it is busy I suggest you leave the luggage, provided it is unable to be seen, and have a look see to find the hotel and judge the best time to unload.

A suggestion we learned here on TA was to pack just a light overnight bag for the hotel on MSM and leave the heavy stuff in the trunk. We stayed just one night and it was a great idea to have just a small over the shoulder bag to carry up the 214 stairs.

We loved Vespers at the Abbaye at night, and watched the sunset from the North Tower.
