Provenace itinerary help

We are planning to drive from Paris to Provence area in mid April. Please let me know what would be most scenic drive to come towards Avignon from Pari.

In Provence, I have two days. What would be the best way to spend these two days to get feel of Provence and enjoy the scenary and history of the area.

Currently, I have reserved hotel in Nimes. Please let me know if you suggest any alternative town.

Thanks.

Since you only have two days in Provence, if you can, I recommend changing your hotel to either Avignon or Arles. Both are more central to Provence. Each has enough to see for 3/4 - 1 day. Both have nice plazas for finding restaurants to watch people and enjoy the sites. Nimes isn%26#39;t actually in Provence, it is further west. It is about 1/2 hour west of Avignon, so you can still access places but it will take you longer.

Here is what I suggest using Avignon as a base.

Day 1 Avignon - Les Halles (early, indoor market),Palais du Papes, Pont d%26#39;Avignon, Rocher Des Doms

Drive to Les Baux, St. Remy, Glanum

Day 2 Luberon - Drive to L%26#39;Isle-sur-la Sorgue (best if you can hit market day on Sunday, go early), Rousillon, Gordes, Joucas, Bonnieux

There is so much to see that 2 days is really a short time. Good luck with planning.

I agree with plan2gosoon. Stay in Avignon for a day. But the rest depends upon your driving nerve and tastes.

If you clench your teeth trying to maneuver around people and baskets in the Costco parking lot at Christmas, stay outside of the walled city. There are hotels with good parking just outside the wall, and the driving and parking are MUCH MUCH better. If you%26#39;ve driven in Paris and this all seems silly to you, by all means stay inside the walled city and enjoy that. It%26#39;s wonderful, especially just to the west of the palace. Avignon is an outstanding destination for even a few days. Lots to see and do there and it%26#39;s all done walking.

Besides that, if you%26#39;re into Roman ruins and history, you%26#39;ve struck it rich. Glanum is otherworldly. You%26#39;re able to walk through, touch and absorb a 2,000-year old city. Truly remarkable. If they had anything like this in the US, it would be behind a glass wall. Remy is a quaint town, but there are plenty of those. West of Avignon and an easy drive away is the Pont du Guard, another amazing Roman ruin. There%26#39;s nothing quite like it.

If antiques, arts and a long lunch with any of the extraordinary local rose wines is your thing, you might wander up to Isle Sur La Sorgue. Very small, but good shops and a killer antiques market. If you%26#39;re into the market thing, check out market days online.

A little further east is Apt, which has a huge market and is an interesting town, either there or back is a beautiful hillside town, Bonnieux, if you%26#39;re into that.

Have fun.

There%26#39;s a Mercure hotel (good 3*) near the Palais des Papes and thus just inside the city walls. You can leave your car in the underground parking lot and then walk everywhere.
