Hello
We want to stay in or near La Rochelle for a couple of days mid June. We are 2 couples in our mid 50s. Can anyone suggest somewhere nice to stay - preferably not a large hotel but must be very nice though not necessaryily luxurious. Any suggestions re what to do and see there would be welcome too
Many thanks
chris

Staying in town either at the Hotel de la Monnaie 3* or the Mercure 3* or the Comfort St Nicholas 3* all hotels very central for getting around town.
In town there are the towers to visit, the aquarium, maritime museum, many places to eat and drink, take in some culture at the Coursive. There are 2 beaches, one near the towers, the other at the Minimes, near the marina, which is fantastic if you like looking at boats.
The market hall is open every day of the week, a huge market takes place in the streets on wed and saturday. There is also a farmers market on friday evening.
Eating out in town is just fantastic, all budgets catered for!
You could take a boat or bus trip to the Ile de Re, maybe see how the famous salt is harvested. If you really wanted to go further afield, then there%26#39;s Chatellaillon Plage (for the races and great beach). Marans to take aboat trip on part of the Marais Poitivin (although thenicest part is nearer Coulon)or the Ile d%26#39;Oleron and Marennes for oysters.
Hope you have a lovely holiday!
