Best option for cell phone coming from US to Paris

What is the best cell phone to get while in Paris. Should I buy or rent one?

We just bring our cell-phones. You will need to notify your carrier so that you can have international roaming. We buy a phone card to use for long calls home.

I think only T-Mobile and ATT provide %26#39;world roaming%26#39; service. And you have to have the right frequency bands on your handset. If your own cell doesn%26#39;t fit these criteria, you can do a few different options.

- just buy a $49 phone from Mobal and pay the per-minute charges on your credit card (around $1.50-$2.00 per minute; texting is cheaper)

- buy a refurbished phone from eBay or somewhere; it must be %26#39;unlocked%26#39; so a different SIM card will work in it. In Paris, buy a French SIM card from Orange or SFR..

- you can rent a phone before you go but be very careful which company you deal with

Hi, do you know if you purchase a phone from Mobal, can you buy a SIM card in Paris and use the the SIM card in the Mobal phone?

Rjbcb, I%26#39;ave been doing some research on this same topic too. This is what I%26#39;ave learned so far.../.

A.If you already owns a phone that is a newer version is with a carrier in the USA that does global..

B. Frequency of 900 or more is needed in order for it to work in France, or Paris.

c. Unlocked

d. Tri band.

Then you would just need a sim card for Paris or what every country you travel.

I will purchase a phone that as all these features. We do quite a few traveling yearly and don%26#39;t like to use the hotel phone.

Supposedly verizon also has global roaming but I haven%26#39;t tried it personally.

|||

I have Verizon for my cell phone service and a Blackberry World Edition phone. Made calls from France, Belgium, Spain and Italy without any problems.

|||

The Mobal phones are locked to their service.

David Lebovitz has an informative article on that very subject. We plan to buy a pay as you go phone from Orange. There are shops all over Paris! We did that in Ireland, and it was great.

Check your options with your current cell phone provider. A friend of mine called AT%26amp;T to set up international calling on her cell phone for her trip last fall, and they ended up sending her a phone to use that was all set up. She gave them the exact dates of her trip, and they automatically switched her home cell phone number to the new phone during the time she was there. Calls on the new phone were .99 cents a minute. It was easy--she didn%26#39;t have to mess with unlocking and all that, and she was provided with a postage paid box to return it when she got home. Painless! She said it did not cost any extra, other than the cost of calls. So that may be another option for you.
